Back Seat Politics

As I’ve followed the blogosphere’s take on the Libyan unrest over the last few days I’ve noticed a number of criticisms accusing President Obama of being slow to act on the crisis. These have come from both liberal and conservative quarters. Today the president acted by closing the US embassy and announcing unilateral sanctions against the Libyan regime. It was also noted that most Americans in the country had been evacuated not long before this action was announced. In this age of instant news has everyone forgotten the prudence of good logistics? It’s just common sense to delay action until as many Americans as possible have been removed from harms way. We’ve learned this the hard way in past evacuations such as south Vietnam at the end of that war. Many people only got out by the skin of their teeth and many never made it home. This whole chain of political blogging makes me think we’re evolving into a culture of back seat drivers. We all think our opinions on driving should carry equal weight to the guy in the drivers seat even though we have no clue what the driving conditions are, or for that matter, any driving skills in the first place. If you’ve ever gotten loud annoying advice from a near sighted passenger who never learned a stick shift or parallel parking you probably have a sense of how it feels to be president these days.

Life, Love, Mystery, that’s what it’s all about.
