Road Songs
1.Close Your Tears
It’s alright if you don’t have answers
No one knows the shape of life ahead of time
And I know that you’re always fighting
Troubled years and distant fears deep inside
Where they hide
Dry your eyes, Close your tears
Every night a new day soon appears
Hold your sighs, release your fear
In our hands something’s special here
Do you feel troubles never ending
It disappears when you see the other side
And you remember when life was truly harder
Before you found in my eyes a love to keep
For yourself
Dry your eyes, Close your tears
Every night a new day soon appears
Hold your sighs, release your fear
In our hands something’s special here
It’s alright if you don’t have answers
No one knows the shape of life ahead of time
No, no, no
Dry your eyes, Close your tears
Every night a new day soon appears
Hold your sighs, release your fear
In our hands something’s special here
repeat
2.Long Road
So many years
I can’t even count the time
Covered in dust and tears
Racing like a wind through my mind
Been a long road
Here to you
Been a long road
Here to you
A trial of the heart
Can never be a simple thing
And then the waters part
Revealing a distant dream
Been a long road
Here to you
Been a long road
Here to you
And I was a sleeping fool
Laying inside of my dreams
And you were a crystal pool
Refreshing my soul
Taking my blues away
Taking my blues away
Taking my blues away
Destined to wander long
Like Job I go my way
You’re the faith that I lean on
To get me through another day
Been a long road
Here to you
Been a long road
Here to you
And I was a sleeping fool
Laying inside of my dreams
And you were a crystal pool
Refreshing my soul
Taking my blues away
Taking my blues away
Taking my blues away
Taking my blues away
3.I Feel Like Flying
When I’m walking in your garden
I see flowers in your hair
When I’m sitting in your parlor
I see love resting there
Cause you are the dream
Of every man that I know
Dreamers and the schemers
They can’t be here
When I’m with you
I feel like flying in your sky
And I feel like trying when I’m in your eyes
The eyes of an angel
When your hand reaches for me
In the softness of the night
I can see the simple truth
The world is here in a touch so light
Cause you are the dream
Of every man that I know
Dreamers and the schemers
They can’t be here
When I’m with you
I feel like flying in your sky
And I feel like trying when I’m in your eyes
The eyes of a dreamer
And an angel
Oh I
When I’m walking in your garden
I see flowers in your hair
When I’m sitting in your parlor
I see love resting there
Cause you are the dream
Of every man that I know
Dreamers and the schemers
They can’t be here
When I’m with you
I feel like flying in your sky
And I feel like trying when I’m in your eyes
I feel like flying in your sky
And I feel like trying when I’m in your eyes
The eyes of a dreamer
And an angel
Oh a dreamer
And an angel
Oh I
4.Night Jasmine
Dust on my heel. Fire on my brow.
And somewhere in between I planted a flower
It grows in moonlight
It blooms in the darkness
The fragrance was so strong in my mind
Wheels on the road. Wind in my face.
And somewhere on the way
I discovered love
It grows in moonlight
It blooms in the darkness
The fragrance was so strong in my mind
The nights in the desert make it clearer
That your alone now
The endless poles and phone lines
They remind me
To be near you is everything
Dust on my heel. Fire on my brow.
And somewhere in between I planted a flower
It grows in moonlight
It blooms in the darkness
The fragrance was so strong in my mind
5.Seven Oceans
It seems strange being here with you
After all my travels looking for whats new
But I feel fine staying right at home
Now there is no reason ever more to roam
Time so long I journeyed all alone
Seven oceans, seven heavens
There I learned your name
Seven lifetimes, poet’s love rhymes
And now I feel the same
Cause you’re the one I was looking for
Your the dream missing from my night
Nothing I ever knew ever felt so right
Hold my hand close to your heart
Feel my deepest promise, love will never part
And time so long I journeyed all alone
Seven oceans, seven heavens
There I learned your name
Seven lifetimes, poet’s love rhymes
And now I feel the same
Cause you’re the one I was looking for
Time so long I journeyed all alone
Seven oceans, seven heavens
There I learned your name
Seven lifetimes, poet’s love rhymes
And now I feel the same
Cause you’re the one I was looking for
It seems strange being here with you
After all my travels looking for whats new
But I feel fine staying right at home
Now there is no reason ever more to roam
Time so long I journeyed all alone
Seven oceans, seven heavens
There I learned your name
Seven lifetimes, poet’s love rhymes
And now I feel the same
Cause you’re the one I was looking for
6.Fool Forty
Can you be what I want (baby)
When I don’t even know myself (maybe)
Don’t you worry it’s not you (baby)
I think my heads breaking down now
Time has taken from me
Dreams are waking up me
Feel like a fool
I feel like a fool
I find it hard to act my age (faded)
The face in the mirror isn’t mine (jaded)
I walk the streets like a ghost (faded)
Invisible inside this shell now
Time has taken from me
Dreams are waking up me
Feel like a fool
I feel like a fool
This curse I know I did not make (traded)
I’m trained to want but should not have (sated)
Money puppets have no say (traded)
And the string can drive you mad now
Time has taken from me
Dreams are waking up me
Feel like a fool
I feel like a fool
Feel like a fool
I feel like a fool
repeat
7.Love Dreamer
Been so long since you lived alone
You forgot it could be this way
Time’s slow and you never know
How to make it through another day
What became of the golden hours
That used to fill your life
It’s a hard way to learn the true
Nature of a wife
Dreams are falling every day
And you wonder will it stay this way
Now she’s thinking of something new
Was there any more a man could do
Do you love your dreamer
Do you love your dream
Do you love your dreamer
Do you love your dream
Take a stand then wash your hands
Were to go from there
Middle aged you turn the page
Reclaim a teenage fear
So long out of the game
You forgot all the rules
There’s only one you’ve got to know
Smile and play the fool
Dreams are falling every day
And you wonder will it stay this way
Now she’s thinking of something new
Was there any more a man could do
Do you love your dreamer
Do you love your dream
Do you love your dreamer
Do you love your dream
Hazy days of Absinthe
Staring at your hands in the dark
The one day while your walking
A young girl smiles for you - yeah
Dreams are falling every day
And you wonder will it stay this way
Now she’s thinking of someone new
Was there any more a man could do
Do you love your dreamer
Do you love your dream
Do you love your dreamer
Do you love your dream
Do you love your dreamer
Do you love your dream
Do you love your dreamer
Do you love your dream
8.I Will Become Your Sea
A whoa whoa whoa yeah
I’ve been debating when I could say to you
What your body’s relating you need me to do
I’m not an old man, there’s still fire in me
I am a godhead, come and dance for me
Waves upon the ocean
Lapping on your shore
I will become your sea
A whoa whoa whoa yeah
You aren’t a stranger, you seem new to me
I’m not in danger of changing company
You’ve got my number. Punch it down and you’ll see
I’ve got the goods girl, everything that you need
Waves upon the ocean
Lapping on your shore
I will become your sea
Oh
Far away from anywhere
You’re the well of my dreams
Far away from anywhere
You’re the essence of my need
A whoa whoa whoa yeah
Far away from anywhere
You’re the well of my dreams
Far away from anywhere
You’re the essence of my need
Far away from anywhere
You’re the well of my dreams
Far away from anywhere
You’re the essence of my need
A whoa whoa whoa yeah
9.Vagabond
Cheap motel rooms, a worn out suitcase
Surrounded by strangers with tired faces
All the highways seem the same
Sometimes I forget the reasons I came
And I am a vagabond
But I’ll keep traveling on
A thousand miles to your smile
My second coastline for this year
Salt spray reminds me of your tears
A palm paradise, hibiscus blooms
I never step a foot outside of the room
And I am a vagabond
But I’ll keep traveling on
A thousand miles to your smile
Aah, aah, aah, aah
Talahasse, then New Orleans
Baton Rouge the first night I will see
Houston Texas and three hours more
Your welcome arms will greet me at our door
And I am a vagabond
But I’ll keep traveling on
A thousand miles to your smile
Aah, aah, aah, aah
10.My Kathline
Dark clouds rolled in on a Monday
Markets down and things look bad
The whole world seems to be falling yeah
Baby’s job’s on the chopping block
My work takes me far away
Life is hard out on the road yeah
But I can’t seem to
Find a reason to feel blue
Must be that tight little
Secret smile she wears
And when she calls me I feel alright
She’s the best thing I ever had in my life
And when she’s smiling the world is right
I just want to be the best thing
Best thing in her life
My Kathline
Three weeks out from home
Writing songs and working hard
I miss her more than I can say yeah
Soon I’ll be back there
Where my heart always sleeps
Dreaming of her keeps me moving yeah
But I can’t seem to
Find a reason to feel blue
Must be that tight little
Secret smile she wears
And when she calls me I feel alright
She’s the best thing I ever had in my life
And when she’s smiling the world is right
I just want to be the best thing
Best thing in her life
My Kathline
But I can’t seem to
Find a reason to feel blue
Must be that tight little
Secret smile she wears
And when she calls me I feel alright
She’s the best thing I ever had in my life
And when she’s smiling the world is right
I just want to be the best thing
Best thing in her life
My Kathline
Road Songs is an album of transitions and reflection. These songs were written as I was passing from my thirties into my forties. It’s a time in your life when you take stock of things, examine your past, and meditate on your possible futures. I had spent the previous decade focused on my marriage and economic priorities but now I was settling into a relatively calm period in my life. My studio business occupied a lot of my time but I also spent a number of years working on the road as a contractor installing and testing telecommunications equipment. As the title of the album implies I wrote the majority of these songs while I was traveling. Solitude is always conducive to writing for me so I wrote and recorded demos in my motel rooms. I would hunker down between the beds with a guitar and a microphone for sound control purposes. Motels are typically constructed from cinder block with thick double pane windows. With the exception of typically noisy air conditioning units motels are surprisingly good places to record in. The album covers a range of styles and subjects reflecting my eclectic musical experiences and tastes. In addition to my wife Kathline providing backing vocals, Scott Wade played drums on four tracks and Ace Pepper did some excellent lead guitar work on Long Road. I’m very grateful to all of them for sharing their time and talents.
